Dust Prevention

Dust is the greatest magician. You take it away, and it always returns. No mirrors, no illusions, no tricks -- it just does. However, this is something you wish you could take away, and have it never return. Unfortunately, thats not the case. But there are ways to hinder dust's return to your under floor, and thus cut down the frequencies of your cleanings. Here are a few suggestions:

Take it outside.
When you are installing new equipment or bringing new software into a room, open the boxes and shipping containers outside of the computer room. Opening of boxes not only releases a multitude of paper dust and particulates into the air, but can also create a fire hazard if left in the room.

Let it be.
With the best of intentions, janitorial services often dust mop floors in an effort to get them cleaner. However, as these mops race over the floor they are just moving all the dust under it! When they pass over a breather tile a majority of the dust falls through the openings and is released into the under floor. If they absolutely must clean the tops of the floor have them use a DAMP mop, not wet, and leave the buckets outside of the room. However, the less human intervention in these sensitive environments, the better.

Keep Out!
The best way to prevent dust build-ups is to keep the dust out of the room. Here are two strategies that are useful in keeping dust out:

Stick to it.
Installing tacky mats into the entrance ways of computer rooms or in the man traps can help catch loose particles before they enter into the room.

Mind the gap.
A majority of the dust that enters the computer room is not generated by the computers or the IT department. Dust is entering from other areas of the building, and depending on where you are that could be dust from the basement (i.e. furnace) which introduces toxic contaminants into your facility. The best way to keep this debris out is by sealing your room.

Initiating these few changes can drastically change the dust levels in your room, perhaps even cut the required frequencies. Not only will your room look better, but the people in there will feel better as well.
